According to reports, Chelsea are close to selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United. How will the move affect Chelsea ?
The departure may result in an increase in game time for Nathaniel Chalabah, a Chelsea youth. Also, with the transfer fee being reported to be something close to £40 million, Chelsea will make a profit on the £21 million they spent on buying him back from Benfica and can use it to fund other transfers, notably for his reported replacement Bakayoko. Chelsea will also end up with a younger squad. And Matic hasn’t completely regained his 14/15 season form, during which he was undoubtedly the best holding midfielder in the league.
On the other hand, Chelsea will be losing an experienced midfielder who has won two premier league medals with Chelsea and was their main midfield enforcer during the 14/15 title winning campaign. Also his replacement might take time to adapt to the premier league and the inexperience of Chalabah might cost Chelsea.
Though Chelsea will benefit financially, if Matic can rekindle his 14/15 season form, Chelsea will be strengthening a rival instead.
