The Manchester United legend, who is still a director at Old Trafford, has been recognised for his lifelong service to sport after joining the Reds back in 1953 and enjoying a glittering career at the highest level.

HRH The Princess Royal handed over the award at the Royal Army and Navy Club in London at a ceremony which also honoured Winter Olympian Lizzy Yarnold.

Sir Bobby has been president of the Torch Trophy Trust since 1999, the year of the club’s famous Treble success, and is clearly a most worthy recipient of the award.

The Torch Trophy Trust is a charity that recognises and supports volunteers in sport and recreation. The annual awards are unique in celebrating the often thankless and unnoticed work of volunteers in sport.
