After last night’s game between Swansea City and Liverpool, both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were asked questions by Sky Sports presenter Ed Chamberlain during their coverage of Monday Night Football and one question came up which was; ‘Rank Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in order’, and as you would guess, it caused a lot of debate between the two former-players.

Bearing in mind one played with Gerrard week-in, week-out and one played with Scholes week-in, week-out, there may have been some biased opinions on the panel, but eitherway, the two discussed who they think was the best out of the English trio.

Here is what Carragher had to say:

“They are three world class players. Top for me though is Stevie, the reason he is top is in terms of his big game influence, in Istanbul and in Cardiff.

“Frank Lampard also for the same reason, he scored the winner in an FA Cup final, scored the goal that won Chelsea the league for the first time. He’s slightly ahead of Scholes for me.”

Whilst Neville defended Scholes:

“Paul Scholes is the best player I’ve ever played with. He’s a unique talent. He controls the tempo of the whole football match.

“I’ll take the Scholes of 2004-2010/11 as the very best. He’s similar to Xavi and Pirlo in his ability to control the tempo of a whole match. Winning games is not just about scoring the goals. People used to ask why Manchester United scored so many late goals, it was because they used to knacker teams out for 85 minutes.”

This debate came after Carragher appeared to own Neville when he said the following about wing-backs:

“Wing-backs are failed wingers or centre-backs, no child grows up and wants to be the next Gary Neville”.
