The REAL truth is revealed…..23 years later

On the 15th April 1989 a true footballing disaster took place in an FA cup tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. Over-crowding in one stand caused a massive crush which led to 96 deaths and 766 injuries.

After the devastating event, it was down to the South Yorkshire police to give evidence in to why it happened and whether it could have been prevented. At the time, the police had stated that there was nothing they could do about the disaster and that the fans were to blame for the crush because of over-crowding and forcing there way into the stand. However in the publication of the Hillsborough Independant Panel’s report, which was released today, it is said that the police were told to change or amend their statements and told to pass the blame onto the fans.

It was also later revealed that 41 out of the 96 people who died could have been saved.

An official Liverpool statement has been made and this is what it said: ‘Liverpool commends the Hillsborough Independent Panel report which acknowledges the avoidable catastrophic failures before, during and after the disaster.

‘The club also welcomes the Prime Minister’s apology to the families and survivors on behalf of the Government and await the Attorney General’s pending review of the report.

‘After 23 long and painful years, our fans have finally been fully exonerated of all blame.

‘Today, the world knows what we have always known, that Liverpool fans were not just innocent on that terrible day but that there was reprehensible and hurtful misrepresentation of the truth.

‘Liverpool Football Club would like to thank the Hillsborough Independent Panel for its rigorous work over the past two-and-a-half years and for publishing a comprehensive report based on the in-depth research and analysis into hundreds of thousands of documents.’

The Prime Minister has also offered a ‘profound apology’ to the families who have been affected because of the Hillsborough disaster and also said he feels like they have suffered a double injustice. Here is what he had to say:

‘With the weight of the new evidence in this Report, it is right for me today as Prime Minister to make a proper apology to the families of the 96 for all they have suffered over the past 23 years.
‘On behalf of the Government – and indeed our country – I am profoundly sorry for this double injustice that has been left uncorrected for so long.’

It has taken 23 years for the real truth to come out of the Hillsborough disaster and it seems that the police could have done a lot more to prevent such a horrible memory for everyone involved. Maybe this report will give some families some closure of the matter, but it still shouldn’t have taken 23 years for the real truth to come out.

sillyseason’s thoughts are with all families effected because of the Hillsborough disaster.
