Atletico Madrid full-back set for Spurs switch, in a proposed £11.5m deal
Toby Alderweireld has passed his medical at Tottenham Hotspur, ahead of completing an £11.5m switch to the North London club.
The Belgian international, who spent last season on loan at Southampton, is the subject of a transfer battle between the Saints, Tottenham and Chelsea.
Southampton were expected to complete an £6.8m deal for the defender at the end of last season, after the expiration of the Spanish sides’ £1.5m get-out clause.
However, the London Evening Standard claim that the 26-year-old completed a medical yesterday – and personal terms are already agreed for the player
Alderweireld made 26 appearances whilst on loan at Southampton last season, helping them to a seventh place finish in the Premier League.
Koeman unsure deal will be done
Saints manager Ronald Koeman admitted that he is unsure whether a permanent deal is close, in a press conference which marked the return of Southampton’s players returned to pre-season preparations.
He said: “What came out in the press, that Southampton signed an option to the player and Atletico Madrid is trying to pay back the option and our knowledge is that it’s, and was, too late.
“And what happened with Tottenham in the middle I don’t know – seriously, I don’t know what happened.
“Les Reed is working on that situation and I will wait for more news about the situation of Toby.”
