Morata buy-back clause worries Marotta

Arsenal are targeting Spanish striker Morata this summer

Juventus general manager Giuseppe Marotta is worried about Arsenal’s potential move for the Alvaro Morata.

The Gunners are keen on bringing the Spain international to the Emirates, with the 23-year-old having scored 25 times since joining the club in 2014. But Real Madrid’s buy-back clause is a worry for Marotta, who is keen to keep the current group of players together.

The fact of Morata staying or not isn’t totally down to Juventus,” Marotta admitted.

“The clause? It’s the sword of Damocles hanging over the player’s stay.”

Real’s sale of the striker in 2014 suggests that they were unsure whether to sell the player, by including a clause in the contract that would let them buy back the player for £24 million.

And with Arsenal understood to be interested in Morata, Real could buy back the player with the intention of immediately selling him on to the Gunners for a handsome profit, at a fee of £40 million.

Juve had to include buy-back clause

Marotta has revealed that the only way of bringing the Spaniard to Juve was to include the clause in the contract.

“It was the only condition in taking him to Turin.” he added.

“In the summer we’ll try to improve our squad in terms of quality, but we have a competitive squad.”

Juve are unlikely to sell Morata directly to the Gunners, but Arsene Wenger may still get his way if Real decide they wan’t to make a profit on a player they decided they no longer wanted, back in 2014.

Although the Spaniard’s goals have dried up slightly this season, he would be a welcome addition to Arsenal’s forward options and would take the pressure off the club’s top scorer, Olivier Giroud, for goals.

More fire power for Wenger’s side this summer may have allowed them to make a more convincing challenge for the title, having been good defensively most of the season, keeping 14 clean sheets.
