Ex-Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has been offered the chance to become manager of the Russian national team, according to reports in Spain.

Pellegrini, 62, has been replaced at the Etihad Stadium by Pep Guardiola, his contract officially ending at the end of this month, and he has been strongly linked with the Southampton manager’s position.

Russia are still reeling from a disastrous Euro 2016 campaign, finishing bottom of Group B after only picking up one point from their matches with England, Wales and Slovakia.

Their campaign has also been marred by persistent crowd trouble across France.

The 3-0 defeat to Wales on Monday proved to be the final straw for Leonid Slutsky, who offered his resignation after the game.

According to AS.com, Russia have offered the 62-year-old a “millionaire” two-year contract to manage the country until the 2018 World Cup, which the Russians will host.

Pellegrini has not yet decided on where his future lies, although he has previously stated that he would like to remain in the ‘elite’ European leagues.

Slutsky only took over from Fabio Capello in August 2015, with the 45-year-old going on to win all of his qualifiers as Russia finished as runners-up in their group to Austria.

“First, we need to change the head coach,” Slutsky revealed, when asked how Russia can prepare for the World Cup on home soil.

“I have to take full responsibility. I had time to prepare and find players and if we weren’t able to succeed, it’s definitely my mistake.”
