Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for Sergio Romero

United are in advanced talks to sign Romero as a replacement for Victor Valdes, according to The Times.

Valdes, 33, was a surprising omission from the squad that departed for United’s pre-season tour of America causing much speculation about his exit from Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal was quick to criticize the Spanish goalkeeper after he refused to play in the second team last season.

“He doesn’t follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that. When you’re not willing to follow those principles, there is only one way and that is out.

“It’s a big disappointment. It’s a pity because we have given him the opportunity to rehabilitate, gave him a contract and then he is fit to play” said Van Gaal.

Valdes OUT Romero IN

United only signed the former Barcelona shot-stopper back in January and he still has one year remaining on his contract.

However, with Fenerbahce rumoured to be interested in his services there’s a good chance he won’t be at United next season.

Romero, 28, is currently a free agent and Van Gaal has worked with the Argentine before during his time at AZ Alkmaar.

Real Madrid cool De Gea interest

United’s first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea appears to be staying at Old Trafford for another year after Real Madrid handed Keylor Navas the no.1 shirt.

The Spain international has been heavily linked with a move to the Bernabeu but United are insistent any deal for De Gea would have to include Sergio Ramos.
