Manchester United are all set to trigger a 1-year extension clause in their superstar player to wave off interest from Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have been trying to get David De Gea from United for a long time now. They were all set to sign him back in 2015 but the deal broke down at the very last minute.

United then signed a 4-year-contract with the Spaniard with an option of a 1-year contract extension. De Gea has been United’s player of the year for 3 times in the last 4 years.

De Gea’s deal expires at the end of 2019 but Mourinho has confirmed that the club will exercise the extension clause. That will see his contract run until 2020.

“It’s obvious that we are not going to let the option [to extend his deal] disappear,” said Mourinho.

“A goalkeeper like he is, at a club that wants to be better and better and better – we are not going to let that option go away. We are going to try.

“[Executive vice-chairman] Mr Woodward is not on holiday – he barely has holidays – and of course he is going to try to give him a contract that keeps him here for much more than the option that, of course, we are going to execute.

When asked if the club is in talks with the player for a new deal, the Portuguese said, “I don’t know. I just trust the board and the work they do. I don’t negotiate players; I don’t discuss numbers and contracts.

“I just say what is obvious and any one of you would say the same: David is to keep.”
