The Colombian striker will return to Monaco after the end of a season-long loan

Radamel Falcao, 29, will head back to his parent club after Manchester United decided against making his move permanent.

The news came shortly after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Hull, in which Falcao didn’t feature because of an injury sustained in training.

On top of the ÂŁ6million United paid when signing the striker on loan, it would have cost a reported ÂŁ43million to sign him on a permanent basis.

Forgone conclusion

The South American appeared to indicate he would be leaving the club in the summer when he waved to fans after being substituted in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Following the final game of the season, United manager Louis Van Gaal described Falcao as a “top professional” and wished him all the best for the future.

There will probably be several players coming in and out as Van Gaal prepares for a major rebuilding job, but not before he heads off on holiday to Portugal.

The 63-year-old intends to maintain contact with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward whilst away on holiday, admitting that deciding which players to keep is “hard work”.

When asked about the future of goalkeeper David De Gea, the Dutchman remained coy about the situation insisting the Spaniard needs to signal his intentions.
