United legend encourages Chelsea ‘keeper to leave Stamford Bridge

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar believes Petr Cech should leave Chelsea this summer, in search of regular first-team action.

The Blues legend has been second choice to Thibaut Courtois this season, after Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was pressured into making the Belgium international first choice, having rejoined the club from Atletico Madrid.

Courtois could have moved on last summer if assurances about his future weren’t given, which has since seen the 32-year-old Cech dropped to the subs’ bench.

“I have a lot of respect for Petr Cech from my time when he played with Chelsea,” said van der Sar.

“I think it’s important for him to find a nice new club where he can show the quality that Petr Cech has.”

Leave the bench at the Bridge

Cech is not short of admirers, with Liverpool and Arsenal both keen on the experienced shot-stopper. However, whether Chelsea would allow their keeper to leave for a direct rival is not yet clear.

It would be a large wage package to have off the list, after spending 10 years at the club.
