Vlaar denies contact with Van Gaal

Aston Villa captiain Ron Vlaar has played down any speculation over a move to Manchester United.

The Netherlands rock has been heavily linked with United over the past few months with former Dutch boss Louis Van Gaal taking the hot seat at Old Trafford.

After impressive performances at the World Cup in Brazil, it was understood that Van Gaal was looking into luring the centre-back to Manchester to patch-up his teams defensive frailties.

With Vlaar out of contract at the end of the season, interest has risen not only from United, but Arsenal, Liverpool and Southampton too and the defender is fully expected to leave Aston Villa when his contract runs up.

But it appears that United may not be as interested in the player as first thought, with Vlaar revealing that no contact has been made with the club.

“There was interest [after the World Cup], but never from the calibre of clubs I would leave Aston Villa for,” Vlaar told Algemeen Dagblad.

“Manchester United? I’ve never heard anything from them. If a club had been seriously interested I would have noticed. That hasn’t been the case.”
