Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that he wanted to bring Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to the Allianz Arena as their manager back in the 90s.

Rummenigge revealed that Munich made an approach for Wenger’s services in the mid-90s whilst he was at French side AS Monaco, but instead, the Frenchman chose to join Japanese side Nagoya Grampus, where he spent during 1995 and 1996 before eventually joining Arsenal.

Munich travel to England to face The Gunners tomorrow night in the first-leg of the Champions League last-16, much like they did last season, and speaking in an interview ahead of the glamour time, Rummenigge admitted that Wenger is a coach he admires.

“In England, there are many good coaches and I like Arsene.

“We were very close in the 1990s to signing him. He was managing Monaco. We were in discussions to bring him to Munich, but he decided to go to Tokyo.”
