Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain was a serious transfer target for the club this summer.

The Gunners were linked with the former-Real Madrid striker all summer and some reports even suggested that it was a done-deal, but eventually, the Argentine left Spain for Italy and joined up with Rafael Benitez at Napoli.

It is believed that Wenger preferred Luis Suarez over Higuain, so he waited on the deal which then allowed Napoli to come in a secure the signing of the forward.

Wenger’s side will come up against Napoli on Tuesday in the Champions League and the Frenchman has revealed that he was interested in their new number-nine.

“We were working on two or three targets and he was one of them,” Wenger said. “It didn’t come off in the end, that doesn’t take anything away from his quality.

“Napoli took advantage of that at the right moment, it’s more about timing as well.

“In the end Real Madrid sold two great players, one of them went to Napoli, one [Mesut Ozil] went to Arsenal so it’s 1-1 on that front.”
