Midfielder will snub Arsenal, according to new manager

Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho will remain at the club past the summer window, snubbing a move to Arsenal in the process, according to the club’s new manager.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the past year, and after he dazzled during the U-21 European Championships, he has been once again linked with a move to the Premier League.

However, his new manager at club level, Jorge Jesus, has confirmed that Carvalho will be staying put in Portugal and will be a Lisbon player come next season.

Hands-Off

Jesus is quoted as telling Portuguese television network SIC: “William is a certainty. Sporting has young people who are already certainties, are not hopes or doubts. William will be enhanced if the team is also.

“Only players value the team respond to winning titles. He’s a player with features to play more. I have no doubt that with me will play more.”

However, the Portuguese midfielder does have a release clause in his contract, thought to be around ÂŁ25million, meaning if Arsenal triggered that, Jesus would have no choice in the star’s future.

Alternative Targets

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for a new central midfielder, with Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton linked and Geoffrey Kondogbia also linked.

However, Schneiderlin is reportedly close to joining Manchester United, whilst Kondogbia has joined Inter Milan from AS Monaco, potentially leaving Arsene Wenger empty handed and relying on Francis Coquelin, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini.
