Manchester United will have to fight for the signature of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, after he tells Malmo fans he’ll “be back”.

The 34-year-old front man remains in discussions over a summer transfer but while United remain favourites, they could have competition from his old club, Malmo.

The world-class striker is said to be after a reunion with Jose Mourinho, who hopes to make him his first big-name arrival after taking over as manager last week. Ibrahimovic hinted in a recent press conference that he had been offered a deal from United but offered no indication as to whether he was going to accept the move.

However, in a news conference in Sweden ahead of the international friendlies, he told fans: “I love Malmo and I wish I could play today. I apologise for that, but I will, I will. Just wait for me.”

United Legends urge club to fight for Ibra:

Former Man United hard-man Roy Keane has told the press that Manchester United should fight for the signature of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as he is regarded as a ‘big player’.

“I think he would be a good signing on a one-year deal,” Keane said on ITV.

“He is a big player, a big character.

“I have said that United have been lacking a few characters and he would be a good fit there.”

Ex United keeper Peter Schmeichel has agreed with his former skipper, saying Zlatan was ‘born’ to pull on the United kit.

“This guy finds whatever the crowd needs,” Schmeichel said. “This guy was born to play for Manchester United.”
