Di Canio Wants Management Return

0

Paolo Di Canio has defended his tenure as Sunderland manager and is hoping to make a return to the Barclays Premier League.

The Italian was dismissed by the Black Cats in September after a tumultuous 13 games in charge amid talk of a player rebellion against his training methods and approach to discipline.

Di Canio replaced Martin O’Neill at the end of last March and was credited with saving the club from relegation after inspiring a famous 3-0 win at north-east rivals Newcastle in only his second match in charge.

But despite bringing in 14 new players over the summer, things quickly turned sour with an opening day home defeat to Fulham kicking off a run which yielded a single point from their first five games of the new season.

Sunderland have since made the final of the Capital One Cup and moved to within a point of exiting the Premier League relegation zone under new boss Gus Poyet, but Di Canio believes the players should take responsibility for the poor start to the campaign.

“There are sometimes managers that are not good enough for some groups but there are also some groups that are not good enough for a manager. In this case, it is the second option,” he told the BBC’s Football Focus programme.

“If you read what those players said when I took charge last year, they praised me.

“In some way, they blamed the previous manager but there was no chaos about that at the time.

“It is not an issue for me. I was sacked like 100 managers in life – but when it happened to me, there is always said to be a problem, but there was not a problem.”

He added: “Five games cannot cancel what I did in the seven games before then, when I saved the club.”

Di Canio was linked with the vacancy at former club Sheffield Wednesday when Dave Jones was dismissed and, while he does not rule out taking a job below the top flight, the ex-Swindon boss is still hoping for a Premier League return.

“I am ready to return,” he said.

“Football is my breath.

“The Premier League is my aim, of course.

“Every manager thinks they are ready for the top, top level but I do not only think about the top.

“The top for me is the place where I can train and work in my way.”

Peter Odemwingie Moving To Stoke

0

Stoke manager Mark Hughes expects to complete a deal to sign Peter Odemwingie from Cardiff on Monday, with Kenwyne Jones going in the opposite direction.

Hughes has moved to recruit controversial Nigeria forward Odemwingie to add to his attacking options, with Trinidad and Tobago forward Jones going in the opposite direction.

Following Sunday’s 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round loss at Chelsea, Hughes said: “It should go through tomorrow and will be concluded then.

“We’re pleased to get Peter in. He’s a good Premiership player with experience at this level, a goal in him and a bit of pace – which we need to add to the squad.

“(I’m) Pleased to add him.”

Everton Linked With Skilful Former R. Madrid Playmaker

0

Everton are keen on a move for Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales. The midfielder has found himself on the edge of the Valencia team this season, and The Mirror believe that he will be allowed to make a loan move to Everton, with a view to making it permanent in the summer.

The 22-year-old has made 19 appearances this season, but has started just seven of those and has frequently found himself on the sidelines. Canales joined Valencia from Real Madrid in 2012, but is not in the plans of manager Juan Antonio Pizzi and will be allowed to leave should a suitable offer come in.

The midfielder has represented Spain at all youth levels, and is still viewed as a player with potential in his homeland. However a combination of injuries and personal problems have stunted his development at Valencia and he could be set for a move to the Premier League, to link up with his compatriot Roberto Martinez at Everton.

Chelsea complete Salah signing

0

Chelsea have completed the signing of Mohamed Salah from Basel.

The Blues announced on Thursday night the signing of the 21-year-old Egyptian winger, subject to the agreement of personal terms and the signing of a medical.

And, before Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie with Stoke, the club confirmed the deal has been concluded.

The deal is for a reported fee of ÂŁ11million as Chelsea signed the forward ahead of Liverpool.

Once it was clear Juan Mata was to join Manchester United, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho began looking for a replacement and Salah immediately came to mind.

Salah has played against Chelsea four times in the last 12 months, scoring three times, including in Basle’s two Champions League Group E victories over Mourinho’s men earlier this season.

Speaking on Friday, Mourinho spoke of his admiration for Salah, the potential of the player and said the Blues made their move quickly.

“I like the fact that he can play the same way our attacking players do, which is players with adaptability, to play right, left, or behind the striker,” Mourinho said.

“He’s young, he’s fast, he’s creative, he’s enthusiastic. When we analysed him he looks the kind of humble personality on the pitch, ready to work for the team and to work and to adapt himself to a new life.

“We believe if he comes that he will have a similar process to the Willian one. Willian needed two or three months to grow up and to feel comfortable playing for us [following his August signing from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala].

“We think with him and [Andre] Schurrle, [Eden] Hazard, Oscar and Willian we will be fine.

“We lose an experienced top player like Juan, but we bring in a young player with great potential.

“Willian did that transition from his previous world to the top world of football. Hopefully, if Salah comes, he can do the same.

“We are ready to help, we are ready to support.

“He has some experience in Europe, the Europa League, Champions League, so he’s not a naive boy arriving in the jungle.

“Hopefully he comes and hopefully with the talented players we have around in the same positions we all can develop together.”

Mourinho believes Salah is joining the right club to grow as a person and as a player after he was caught up in controversy during his time at Basel.

During a two-legged Champions League qualifier between the Swiss side and Maccabi Tel Aviv last August, Salah refused to shake hands – instead changing his boots in one instance and bumping fists with his opponents in the other – while there were also comments attributed to him expressing an anti-Israeli sentiment.

Salah insisted the comments were fictitious and his actions were a result of external pressures.

Yet Mourinho has promised to nurture the 21-year-old at Chelsea, who are owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is Jewish.

“It’s not a concern, because we know the club Chelsea is, I know the manager I am,” Mourinho said.

“I know that Chelsea’s capable of helping people and making people feel the way we think people should feel, which is in football and in life be open and respectful to every ethnicity, to every religion.

“People has the right to be what they are. Chelsea as a club, and me as a manager, we will be more than ready to help him.”

Salah has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract and will wear the number 15 shirt for Chelsea.

He said: “I’m very happy to sign for such a big club. I hope I can make the Chelsea supporters happy.”

Di Canio launches attack on Sunderland players.

0

Former Sunderland Manager Paulo Di Canio has launched a verbal attack on four of his former players, in yet another controversial twist in the tales of Di Canio.

John O’Shea, Lee Cattermole, Steven Fletcher and Phil Bardsley have all been targeted by their former manager, in a rather bizarre war of words.

The harsh words may seem a bit out of the blue, with Cattermole’s return sparking an out cry from the Italian.

Di Canio was sacked from his role on the 21st September following a heavy 3-0 defeat at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion, bringing a colourful end to his time on Weirside.

And the Italian didn’t hold back on his quotes about both Cattermole, and full back Phil Bardsley.

Di Canio stated….

“Those two players [Cattermole and Bardsley] were rotten,” he said. “The most unprofessional players I ever worked with. What Bardsley has done in the last year speaks volumes. Photos of him lying on the floor in a casino covered by ÂŁ50 notes and laughing at the team losing on the opening day, that’s public. It’s no surprise these players were kicked out of my plans. The reason Sunderland stayed up at the end of last season was because Cattermole was injured and Bardsley played very little.”

Di Canio believes Sunderland are deeply embroiled in another relegation battle partly because of their “weak” mentality and he used the term two-faced to describe his former captain, O’Shea.

“I don’t like people who, when they speak to you, don’t look into your eyes,” said the 45-year-old Italian who now believes it is his “destiny” to manage West Ham. “He [O’Shea] should say sorry to some of his team-mates for the many times he came into my office to say something unfavourable about them. This is the same person that also came to me when I first took over and said things about [Martin] O’Neill.”

Ironically, those players Di Canio targeted have all found solidarity, and a new lease of life under current boss Gus Poyet, who has guided the club to a Wembley Final, with Sunderland advancing through on penalties against Manchester United in the League Cup.

Di Canio revealed it his his “destiny” to manage West Ham” and wants the hotseat at Upton Park, before going onto say…

“He [O’Shea] should say sorry to some of his team-mates for the many times he came into my office to say something unfavourable about them. This is the same person that also came to me when I first took over and said things about [Martin] O’Neill.”

Di Canio id still fuming at Steven Fletcher, following claims about training ground antics, including a revelation of benned Tomato Sauce.

“I don’t like people fooling around when we’re having a serious discussion about strategy,” said Poyet’s predecessor. “I don’t like people who laugh when they keep missing the goal in training or miss a tackle that leads to conceding a goal.”

Balotelli in Mourinho plea

0

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has admitted he would like to play for Mourinho once again. The pair were together at Inter Milan before Balotelli left for Manchester City in 2010 and during their time together at Inter Milan they did not always see eye-to-eye and were invloved in a number of confrontations.

Balotelli in Mourinho plea 1

He told the Mail on Sunday, “Of course I would like to play under Jose again. In my first days at Inter we had some problems, but then it turned into a mutual respect, and now we have a real friendship”.

AC Milan’s position in Serie A makes it all the more possible that Balotelli could be reunited with Mourinho. They currently sit in 11th position in the league and that brings the prospect of no Champions League football next season and none of the added revenue that comes with Champions League football. So that could mean that AC Milan would be willing to cash in on the 23 year old and with Chelsea looking in need of a new striker, they could be enticed to bring the striker to Stamford Bridge.

But if an approach looks was to be made for the Italian by Chelsea then it would be more likely to come in the summer as Mourinho has recently admitted that he does not intend to buy a striker in the January transfer window.

Balotelli added, “It is never boring playing under Jose. When you are in Mourinho’s team it is a family and he coaches on the principle that if all is well with the family it doesn’t matter what is going on outside the team”.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Mohamed Salah

0

Chelsea Football Club have announced the signing of FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah for a fee worth around ÂŁ11million.

The Egyptian international looked all-but certain to come to the Premier League this month, but with Liverpool as they were closing in on his signature and even one of Salah’s team-mates said the deal was 99% complete, but that 1% missing was costly as a late bid from Chelsea hijacked the move completely.

The Blues, who sold Juan Mata to Manchester United, made their move quickly and had a fee accepted and have today formally announced the signing of the 20-year-old.

Jose Mourinho was asked on ITV just before his side’s clash with Stoke City whether or not the deal had been completed and he responded with: ‘Yes it’s all done’.

Manchester United forced to move quick with Cabaye after PSG make bid

0

The 28-year-old has long been mooted as a potential central midfield acquisition for United given his availability for the right price.

Sky Sports News have just announced that Newcastle rejected a ÂŁ14 million bid for Cabaye from Paris St Germain and with less than seven days left in the January transfer window, Cabaye could represent the perfect midfielder to bring in some much-needed quality but United will have to move fast if we want to sign him.

Although Cabaye is not the young, long-term solution to United’s midfield problems that Moyes has been talking about, he is a Premier League proven midfielder who could provide the short-term impetus to help United secure a Champions League place this season.

At 28, Cabaye is in his prime and United could do with that sort of experience right now and I don’t think that Moyes can achieve his long-term goals without bringing in a midfielder in January, even if it is one many see a short-term fix.

The fact of the matter is that Cabaye would improve United’s midfield no end and with PSG opening the bidding at £14 million, he would certainly be available if United were to go in with a better offer for the Frenchman.

Chamberlain on the reason for Arsenal’s great form this season

0

There was an incident during Arsenal’s 4th round F.A Cup clash with Coventry on Friday night in which Oxlade-Chamberlain misplaced a pass which could have led to a goal and for that error, Per Mertesacker gave the England International and earful for his troubles. The scoreline at that point was 2-0 and it shows just how much the players expect from each other.

Oxlade-Chamberlain understands the significance of tha incident. “We set each other high standards and if you do something that’s not good enough you can bet your bottom dollar that one of your team-mates will tell you when he believes you’re better than that” he said.

He added, “I gave the ball away and it resulted in them hitting the post. I knew what I did and I knew what I did wrong there and Per just gave me a friendly reminder. That’s what you need, you need to keep each other’s standards high and we’ll be doing it all season.

“But it’s important that we do it in the right way, whoever it is. If it’s Per he’ll have shout but then afterwards he will come and explain it to you and that’s what makes you respond to it. He doesn’t do it in a negative way and that’s the way we go about it. We’ll just keep doing things positively”.

That trust in each other is an important ingredient for a successful team and, according to Oxlade-Chamberlain, the familiarity within the squad is another positive.

“The main group and spine of the team has been together for two or three years so it’s starting to form that togetherness,” he said. “Knowing each other better on and off the pitch helps our style of play.

“We’ve learnt that everyone has been in and around it for a few years now and we know what the boss expects and how he wants us to go about it. We know what to expect with each other and I think you can see that now when we do play.Even when we’re not playing well we know how to grind out results and that’s a big thing”.

Arsenal’s next match is trip to Southampton, a place were Oxlade Chamberlian learnt his trade before leaving for Arsenal.

“To go back there in any sense is always really nice, especially when we go to play them,” he said. “Last season I went back there and it was a surreal feeling for me, warming up on the opposite side of the pitch and being in the opposite dressing room.

“It was the first time I went back there to play so it was a bit weird for me. I’m looking forward to going back this season, obviously they’re playing really well so it’s a tough game for us.”

It is important that Arsenal don’t slip up because, although they currently sit top of the Premier League, things can change so easily because of how tight things are this season with Manchester City and Chelsea breathing down their necks and Liverpool and Tottenham only 8 points adrift of the leaders.

Signing Mata is just the start, says Moyes

0

Manchester United manager David Moyes insists that the signing of Juan Mata is just the start for the club and has promised fans that more signings of the same calibre will come in the near-future.

The Red Devils spent ÂŁ37.1million on bringing the Spaniard from Chelsea, and Moyes is adamant that the club are prepared to spend big on five more players, if the right ones come available.

There has been a lot of speculation that the next player arriving at Old Trafford could be Southampton’s Luke Shaw, and it is believed that United are prepared to spend around ÂŁ23million on the English left-back.

Speaking after introducing Juan Mata to the media, Moyes admitted that it will be tough to sign more players this month, but he has promised that big signings will be made in the Summer.

“This is the first, and there will be many more to come in time. I want the quality of Juan to be the start of it,” Moyes told MUTV.

“I don’t think we will have any more (new signings) in January – I’m still working on it and looking to do so. But hopefully it will be the first of some new signings, some new players who will arrive, more likely in the summertime.

“Undoubtedly we could all do with a bit of a lift. We have not done as well as we would have liked to do. We see this as the start, we have to look to improve and I’m going to try to bring in some new players to make that happen.

“I want to build an exciting team, I want to win and I want to give the supporters something to shout about – I’ve not done that often enough.”

Rodgers battles injury worries as Merseyside derby draws near

0

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has a selection dilemma brewing ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton next week.

Injuries are mounting at Anfield, and Rodgers is left with something approaching a defensive crisis.

He admitted on Thursday that the Reds had been training with just 15 players this week, with Glen Johnson the latest to join the casualty list.

Johnson joins Lucas Leiva, Jose Enrique, Sebastian Coates and Daniel Agger on the sidelines, whilst Mamadou Sakho is still working his way back to full fitness after a hamstring injury.

The return of Jon Flanagan, who should feature in the FA Cup at Bournemouth tomorrow, comes at a crucial time.

With two potentially season-defining games in little more than 72 hours, Liverpool are down to just five senior defenders.

One of those, Aly Cissokho, is woefully out of form, whilst Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel are yet to convince as a partnership.

Flanagan has not played since December 21, and Martin Kelly has made one senior start in 16 months.

Crisis? Not quite. Liverpool do still have Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling, after all.

But their resources are being stretched to the full at the moment, especially with Lucas, their only recognised defensive midfielder, also on the treatment table.

Rodgers will hope his patched-up back-line can stand up to the task, in what could be a pivotal game in his side’s season.

Julian Draxler to be a Gooner after all?

0

Arsenal Football Club are in advanced talks with German side Schalke regarding the future of attacking-midfielder Julian Draxler.

The Gunners have been closely monitoring the 20-year-old all month, but have been put off making a formal bid due to the Bundesliga outfit refusing to sell this month and would rather listen to offers in the Summer.

However, reports are suggesting that officials from both camps are discussing a potential move and it could be finalised by the end of this month after all.

It is believed that Arsenal are prepared to pay just under ÂŁ30million, but Schalke are holding out for around ÂŁ35million, which could produce a stumbling block in the deal, however, Arsenal are willing to pay some add-ons which will likely raise the fee in the future.

Draxler has made it clear to both clubs that he wants to complete the move to Arsenal, which will see him join countrymen Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry, and both clubs are ensuring that the best deal is made for both parties.

Juan Mata writes letter to Chelsea fans

0

Spanish international Juan Mata has finally completed his move from Chelsea to Manchester United today in a ÂŁ37.1million move and he has already written an open letter to all of the fans of Chelsea Football Club.

Despite winning the club’s player of the year award two years in a row, Mata found game-time hard to come by after Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, and that was one of the main reasons behind his move to Old Trafford.

The Spaniard completed all the paperwork and medical yesterday and was officially announced as a Manchester United player.

Since arriving, the 25-year-old has taken some time away from the media to write out an open letter to his previous fans and below you can read the full letter.

“Hi everyone, As you can imagine this is a very important day in my life, and with these lines I would like to express the memories and emotions that come to me as I write. This letter is written from my heart, and first of all I would like to say that I will never forget all the affection given to me by the Chelsea fans.

“From the very first day until the last. With your support and affection I have grown up as a player and I have had an amazing time both on and off the pitch. I will always feel the gratitude towards you. Always. No words are enough to give back all the things I have received.

“There has been plenty of good moments: the FA Cup, my first trophy as a Blue; the immense happiness of winning titles for the first time in the club’s history, such as that magical Champions League night in Munich and the Europa League…

“On the other hand, I have experienced some complicated situations from a personal point of view, mainly during the last six months. Every message I got through the social media, every nice word you have said to me on the street, and of course, your support in the stadium, has made me feel incredibly proud of the Chelsea fans; you deserve a team like the one you’ve got, with so many fantastic players.

“I won’t forget the faith you put in me when I was given the player of the year award the last two seasons. I feel really proud and I will never forget those nights. Thank you so much for the way you have treated me, you have been unbelievable.

“I hope you understand that after going through a complicated and, for me, new situation in the last few months, I believe this is the best choice in order to carry on with my football career and to keep enjoying this sport.

“Before last summer, my intention was to stay here for a long time; as long as the club wanted me to, and to keep winning trophies for Chelsea FC. This is how happy I was in the club and in the city. However, as you all know, things changed after the preseason.

“From feeling like an important player, I started to experience some difficult situations and I felt unable to help the team to the extent that I wanted and was used to. Obviously, I fully respect the circumstances. Football is a team sport and it’s not easy to play regularly in such a good squad.

“In sports you may win or lose, but the most important thing is to give everything. I hope you know and feel that I have always done so. In every game, in every training session, without exception. I have always tried my best for the club. I would like to emphasise the affection, admiration and respect that I’ve had for my former team mates since the first day. I want to thank the captains for their help and understanding at all times.

“They made me feel comfortable when I arrived and they have supported me throughout the difficult times this season. I thank all my former team mates for these two and a half years and I wish them the best, personally and professionally, for the future. Of course I have been closer to some of them, but the most important thing is that my years in Chelsea have left me with great friends. Friends forever, football rivalries aside.

“I also want to highlight the day-to-day job of every member of the Chelsea staff: medical team, kit men, staff at Cobham and Stamford Bridge, media and marketing department, Chelsea TV team… All of them are very important in making this club a great one. Thank you for your treatment and your efforts to make the life of the players easier. Furthermore, thanks to every manager I have had the pleasure to work with during my time here.

“They have all been a big help for my progression as a player. I have always respected their decisions, whatever they were; they made me more mature and a stronger person. You learn from everything, and certain situations make you think about other team mates who are coping with similar situations more regularly. Thank you Andre for giving me the opportunity to join Chelsea FC. Without your support, none of this would have happened.

“To Robbie and Rafa, for their unlimited trust in me. And to Jose, for making me a stronger player, because in difficult moments, I have learnt to remain positive and to keep working hard. Lastly, I want to thank the Club, and in particular its owner, Roman Abramovich, for trusting me and making an important investment when signing me. Also for their understanding regarding my situation over the last months.

“I’m very glad to have been part of the squad that made his and our dream come true: winning the Champions League on that unforgettable night in Munich. Additionally, my years in Chelsea have been profitable for the club, which I’m very pleased about. I want to make clear that the stage that now comes to an end has been extremely important for me, personally and professionally.

“Although many of you, like myself, never thought this moment would come, this is football and a new chapter is about to begin. I would have liked to say good bye to all of you in the stadium, or in a press conference, but it has not been possible. I’m sure, i will be able to do it in the future, because is what you deserve.

“Evidently, today is a day of mixed feelings, remembering the past and looking forward to the future and what it has to bring. I look forward to being happy and to enjoy what I like the most: play football. I will never forget my time in Chelsea and the affection I take with me, I will keep forever. I wish you the best. A big hug to all of you. THANK YOU so much, Juan.”
