Blackburn 1 Manchester City 1

0

Blackburn Rovers managed to gain a creditable 1-1 draw against in-form Premier League side Manchester City, thanks to a Scot Dann tap in, in the FA Cup 3rd round on a windy, overcast day at Ewood Park.

City came into the game on the back of a superb run in the Barclays Premier League, with the Citizens sitting 2nd in the table at the half way stage of proceedings in the Premier League, so a win was predicted for Pellegrini’s men.

But they faced a resilient Rovers side, buoyed by a terrific New Years Day victory at Leeds United, a win which sees the Rovers lie in 10th in the Championship, just two points outside the play offs.

Rovers started the Cup tie by taking the game to their Premier League counterparts, with Costal Pantilimon, who was replacing Joe Hart in goal, had to be at his best to deny Scott Dann’s towering header in the opening stages, as Rovers pressed, Tom Cairney also saw his shot saved by the big Romanian.

Rudy Gestede was proving to be a nusience in the Manchester City defece, as he won the corner, which almost lead to a Rovers goal, with Scott Dann again forcing Pantilimon into a decent save.

City were slowly getting into the game, as Edin Dzeko connected with James Milner’s teasing ball, but the Bosnian’s header was well saved by the returning Paul Robinson, in the Rovers goal.

Fernandinho also tested Robinson, with the former England keeper being forced into a routine save, as City pressed on the bobbly pitch of Ewood Park.

Jolean Lescott then header wide from a Milner corner as City looked to asset their Premiership quality, against an improving Rovers side.

Rudy Gestade sae his shot go just over the bar, as both sides looked to take the game to one another.

City, who were starting without the likes of Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany could have took the lead through Alvaro Negredo, who turned Dann and saw his shot go just wide.

After a spell of first have pressure, City took the lead, after the impressive David Silva whipped in a teasing corner, which was headed on by Edin Dzeko, which allowed the in-form Negredo to stab home at the far post, to give City a 1-0 lead at Ewood, in first half stoppage time.

As the second half began, City looked to kill the game off, as Dzeko saw his looping header saved, and Silva’s trickery, ended in a shot which went just wide of Robinson’s far post.

Up the other end, Tommy Spurr’s long throws were causing havoc in the City box, aided by the swirling wind in East Lancashire, Pantilimon pushed away a goal bound header, before Gestede headed wide for the hosts.

The pressure of Rovers soon paid off, after Pantilimon fumbled Gestede’s powerful header from a corner, allowing Scott Dann to take advantage and side foot into the corner, past Pantilimon, to bring the Championship side level, and leave the Romanian red faced.

Cairney almost profited from Pantilimon’s low confidence, with Cairney beating Nastasic , and firing at Pantilimon, who struggled to save on the wet turf.

City went all out attack to try and win the tie, as the substitute Toure broke away on a counter attack, before laying the ball of for Navas, who cut inside and curled a shot, destined for the far corner, but Paul Robinson managed to palm the ball around the post for a corner.

Robinson also had to keep Yaya Toure’s long dipping drive out, as the Sky Blues pressed for a winner late on.

Rovers substitutes DJ Campbell, and Jodan Rhodes linked up, ending with Rhodes firing over the bar, as Rovers hung on.

DJ Campbell could have given his side an historic win, but he headed wide from close range.

City had to sustain late pressure from the Championship outfit, but held on despite Dedryck Boyata seeing red, for a rash tackle.

Gyasi Zardes wins LA Galaxy Goal of the Year Competition

0

Gyasi Zardes promised that his skills would “blow people’s minds” when he entered MLS in January after an excellent college career and the LA Galaxy Homegrown forward certainly delivered all that and more with his goal that took home the 2013 LA Galaxy Goal of the Year honors.

Zardes’ remarkable individual effort against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on July 20 was the runaway winner of the Galaxy’s Goal of the Year competition by garnering more than 20 percent of the fans’ votes. During his rookie season, the forward’s mix of pace and technical ability wowed many, and his goal to seal a victory over the Whitecaps was the perfect blend of his skills. Coming in second place was Juninho’s curling free kick finish against Seattle Sounders FC on Sept. 21 while Jose Villarreal’s stunning goal against Real Madrid in the Guinness International Champions Cup on Aug. 1 rounded out the top three.

The goal came just moments before the hour mark with the score tied at 1-1 when Todd Dunivant lofted a ball forward to an outstretched Zardes who kept the ball from floating out of possession. While towing the end line, the rookie was able to deftly lift the ball over Vancouver’s Brad Rusin, blowing past him in the process before launching a right-footed shot that bypassed a sliding Johnny Leveron and the out-stretched arms Whitecaps goalkeeper Brad Knighton to seal a 2-1 LA victory.

Jaaskelainen confident of West Ham revival.

0

West Ham United’s veteran goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen has stated that his side cannot dwell on the Hammers Premier League position, with Jaaskelainen confident that his side can turn things around for the better.

West Ham currently sit 19th at the half way point of the Premier League campaign, and have struggled for consistancy, with the Hammers also having to contend with a lengthy injury list, with the likes of Ansy Carroll, Ricardo Vaz Te, James Tomkins, and James Collins all out with long term injuries, Captain Kevin Nolan is aslso suspended following his sending off in the defeat at Fulham on New Years Day.

Nolan starts a four match ban by missing Sunday Lunchtime’s FA Cup tie away at Championship side Nottingham Forest, in what will be a tough game for Allardyce’s struggling Hammers side.

Jaaskelainen has also had his own struggles this season, having come under critisism from some Hammers fans after lacklustre League performances, and was dropped in mid December by Sam Allardyce, with Allardyce opting to start Spanish goalkeeper Adrian, a new recruit from La Liga side Real Betis.

Goalkeeper Jaaskelainen has also had a rollercoaster campaign, keeping eight clean sheets in his opening 16 Premier League fixtures, before returning to the first team fold in the 3-3 draw against West Bromwich Albion at Upton Park last Saturday.

The veteran Finn stated in an interview….

“It is tough times at the moment and it seems that everything we do is going against us,” said the No22. “We need to keep believing that we will turn it around. It is just the little fractions that we are getting wrong.”

“You do cope with it,” he explained. “You try to prepare the same for every individual game and go from there really. You just have to work hard and do your best.

“If you look at the team, we have got loads of injuries at the moment – that’s not an excuse, but it is a little bit against you. I think we still have enough quality to come to places like Fulham and get something out of the game. But we must keep doing what we are doing and hopefully turn it around.

“With regard to the defensive injuries, you just have to get it on with it, really. Joey O’Brien and George McCartney are both experienced players and they can cope with that for a few games and hopefully then we can start getting our centre-halves back.”

Jaskelainen was also fearful of his own future as the first choice keeper, with Adrian providing Jaaskelainen with some serious competition for the jersey., Jaaskelainen was dropped from the Bolton Wanderers side in late 2011, and failed to make another outing for the club.

“Obviously I was disappointed to be on the bench, because of the way we started the season with eight clean sheets in 16 games, but that is part and parcel of football – sometimes you get dropped.

“But you just need to approach the next game and leave everything behind you. The only thing you can control is the future.”

Jaaskelainen also thought Nolan’s red card changed the game at Craven Cottege.

The sending-off obviously changed the game a little bit, but even when you have got ten men you still have chances and you are still in the game. They passed it very well in the second half, though. With the way they scored the second goal we can see that.

“That is the way it goes sometimes, but we have to make sure that we do the right things in the cup game on Sunday, though everybody knows the main focus is definitely on the Premier League and we need to start getting on an unbeaten run.”

The Keeper kept the Hammers in the game on New Years Day, making superb saves from Adel Taarabt, Dimitar Berbatov, and Darren Bent in the 2-1 defeat against their London relegation rivals.

The defeat means the Hammers have now won just 1 game in 13 attempts, in what is a difficult time for Allardyce’s side.

Jaaskelainen face a tough set of games after the cup tie, starting with a League Cup semi final tie at in-form Manchester City.

“Maybe it is a good thing with the injuries we have at the moment. It gives us a little bit more time for the boys to recover and obviously it is good for our skipper that his suspension goes through the cup as well.”

Vancouver Whitecaps’ Camilo Sanvezzo wins 2013 AT&T Goal of the Year award

0

Vancouver Whitecaps forward Camilo Sanvezzo, who terrorized MLS defense this year to the tune of 22 goals will take home the 2013 AT&T Goal of the Year award after fans voted his scissor kick volley against the Portland Timbers in Week 32 as the top strike of 2013.

It was a worthy winner. Y.P. Lee volleyed a cross back across the Timbers’ area, and though it looked to be sailing over his head, Camilo somehow contorted his body and connected perfectly with the ball, giving 2013 Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year Donovan Ricketts no chance to make the save.

It is the first Goal of the Year win for both Camilo and the Whitecaps, who missed out on the playoffs despite a memorable season from the 25-year-old Brazilian. He took home the award with over 47 percent of the fan vote, easily trumping Portland’s Diego Valeri, who collected 30 percent of the vote for his fine solo effort against the New York Red Bulls in the opening game of the season.

Arsene Wenger claims Diego Costa would cost the Gunners £145million!

0

Arsene Wenger has claimed Diego Costa would cost a staggering £145m.

Atletico Madrid striker Costa is on Arsenal’s transfer wish list and it was widely believed he has a £32m buy-out clause – but Wenger fears it is far more.

Mirror Sport asked Wenger whether he would consider trying to sign Costa in January to solve his striker crisis.

“What, £145m?!” he laughed. “Honestly, you want to keep your chances in the season at the best possible level.”

Mirror Sport has reported on Arsenal’s scouting missions on Costa and even revealed last August that they started looking at him as a back-up option for their main summer target Luis Suarez.

It has been widely reported that Costa’s clause is worth £32m and Arsenal may struggle to get him in January, especially with Atletico still in the Champions League and in World Cup year.

But Wenger’s need has been increased after Olivier Giroud’s ankle injury and Nicklas Bendtner could be out for up to two months.

Giroud would have been back to face Spurs but illness meant he missed training yesterday. Giroud’s ankle was badly injured after Newcastle defender Mike Williamson’s studs pierced his boot in Arsenal’s win at St James’s Park last Sunday.

Wenger admits he now needs a new striker but must decide whether to go for a long term target now or a stop gap until next summer when more players are on the market.

Wenger said: “Is it for short term or a stop-gap? Ideally, you want a longer solution. But a longer solution looks much more difficult to find in January than a short gap.

“You can find a solution somewhere – a club that has financial trouble and wants to get rid of a big contract for five or six months.

“But to find in January exactly the player who will be tomorrow’s star on the longer term is much more difficult?”

Way I’m treating Juan Mata is painful but the team has to come first – says Mourinho

0

Jose Mourinho has claimed it is “hurting him” to have to treat Juan Mata “with a hard heart”.

Two days after declaring the “door is open” should the Spanish playmaker want to leave Stamford Bridge, Chelsea boss Mourinho insisted he wants Mata to stay.

Former Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez, now at Napoli, heads the queue seeking to land Mata, with Juventus, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain also keen on a player Chelsea will not sell to a Premier League rival.

But the Portuguese maintained that his treatment of Mata, the club’s Player of the Year for the past two seasons but now relegated behind Oscar in the Blues’ pecking order, was the right thing to do – irrespective of the personal anguish it was causing him.

Mourinho said: “I try to do my job forgetting I have a soft heart, pretending that I have a hard heart. Many times it hurts me, not just with Juan, over the decisions I have to make. But I think to do my job in the best way is to do it thinking the team is more important than any player.

“When I have to make decision I always try to be a cold one, icy, analyse situation and try to make the best decision for the team, maybe not forgetting the player but putting the person secondary.

“But yes, it hurts me. He’s a good kid, he works hard and I know it’s not easy situation for him not to be playing every time.

“If he came to me and said he wants to leave, I would say, ‘Go to Stamford Bridge and speak with the board.’ And while he was on his way there, I’d call the board to say ‘Don’t let him go!”‘

The final trophy of Mourinho’s first spell in charge at Chelsea was the 2007 FA Cup and he promised to field a strong side in the third-round tie at Championship Derby on Sunday, as he’s keen to avoid the fixture congestion a replay would bring.

The Blues boss added that he had grown up in love with the competition, a relationship intensified when he worked under Sir Bobby Robson at Porto.

“I have a big feeling for the FA Cup,” said Mourinho. “I remember being a kid, when we had a black and white television and there wasn’t live football every day, that as a family we waited for the Cup Final.

“So I remember Coventry in 1987. Wimbledon in ’88. Coventry I remember because I was with them. I was with the underdog.

“Then, working with Mr Robson, he always spoke about big things in English football and tradition of FA Cup which gave me that feeling. And when I came here and played at Stamford Bridge against some smaller teams, who played from the first minute without any fear, trying to win, bringing 10,000 fans to support them.

“That’s unique. Every match a big one. It’s a great competition.”

Jose Mourinho says that none of his players are divers

0

Oscar became the latest player to be shown a yellow card for diving in a series of high-profile offences which prompted FIFA president Sepp Blatter to talk of the use of sin-bins.

Mourinho reprimanded Oscar following the Brazilian’s tumble over Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis, but insists it was a one-off.

“It’s impossible for him to get a reputation, unless somebody wants to be unfair and to clean the image of other people by using Oscar’s situation in the last game,” he said.

“I want to make it clear: there are many divers in the world of football. There are many divers in some big clubs in the world of football.

“There are some divers in England. Not many, some. In Chelsea, no divers, no divers at all.

“Oscar made a mistake, which he tells me and I believe him, he was completely convinced the goalkeeper was coming to smash him.

“The goalkeeper didn’t, he made his mistake, he was punished with a yellow card, he accept the yellow card in a very calm way.

“His manager comes after in the press to say ‘well done Mr Atkinson’. End of story. Here we don’t have divers.”

Mourinho also stated Eden Hazard is not awarded free-kicks and penalties when he is fouled.

“It looks like opponents who can do anything to him and nothing happens,” he said.

“With Hazard it doesn’t matter in the box, outside the box. Not against Southampton, but week after week in the box there are penalties.

“And, as it happened in Southampton, outside the box every action is a foul and this kid is anything but a diver.”

Mourinho wants diving to be eradicated from the global game.

“If Mr Blatter wants to analyse the situation, I give him my advice and my experience, because I’ve worked in many different countries,” he added.

“Go to other countries, fight the problem in other countries, don’t be afraid to go to the big clubs. Don’t be afraid to go to some big players.

“And after that come to England, because in England the job is easy. England is the best country.”

Wenger keeping an eye on Mandzukic

0

The Denmark international underwent a scan on Friday to determine whether he has torn or strained ligaments in his right ankle.

Club medics will receive full confirmation of Bendtner’s injury on Saturday morning.

Initially, manager Arsene Wenger was hopeful the 25-year-old would miss just three weeks, but there were fears on Friday that his time on the sidelines could be longer.

If the scan shows torn ligaments, then Bendtner will be out for around two months.

And should that prove to be the case then Wenger admits he will have to delve into the transfer market to bolster his already thin options up front.

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been watched by Gunners scouts, while there is also a firm interest in taking Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Morata on loan.

Sportsmail understands Arsenal are also monitoring Mario Mandzukic at Bayern Munich.

The Croatian is rated highly by scouting staff and with Robert Lewandowski set to arrive on a controversial free transfer at the Allianz Arena ahead of next season, Mandzukic’s future is under question.

But any deal for the 27-year-old is unlikely to be explored this month.

‘My transfer plans depend on how long Bendtner will be out for,’ admitted Wenger, whose side host bitter rivals Spurs in the FA Cup this evening.

‘At the moment we are just considering our options. I must confess they are quite restricted.

‘If it’s months rather than three weeks, then we would have to think about buying.’

Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood says the Gunners face another problem in the striking department in the shape of Emmanuel Adebayor.

The former Gunner has declared himself fit for a return to the Emirates after being stretchered off at Old Trafford.

Adebayor scored the opener in the 2-1 victory against Manchester United on New Year’s Day – his fourth goal in five games – and Sherwood was full of praise.

‘There are certain players you look to see if they are playing when the team sheet comes in,’ he said.

‘I did that at Old Trafford to see straight away if Wayne Rooney’s playing and I’m sure Arsenal will do the same with Adebayor.

‘It says a lot about him that he is obviously under some stress when he came off on the stretcher.

‘He was in real pain and couldn’t walk, was getting cramped up everywhere.

‘For him to put himself in the frame for another huge game – he knows how big this game is.

‘He’s played in enough of them, so for him to put himself in the frame for this is real credit to him.’

Adebayor was sent off at Arsenal in November 2012 just minutes after he had opened the scoring as Spurs lost 5-2 under their previous manager Andre Villas-Boas.

But Sherwood insists he is a reformed character now that he has been welcomed back into the first team, saying: ‘Adebayor is cleverer than people think. He realises and he learns from his mistakes.

‘It was a 50-50 at Arsenal that day and it could have gone either way whether he got sent-off, so he might have been a bit unfortunate.

‘I’m sure he’s learned from that and let’s keep our fingers crossed he stays on all the game.

‘He is a good character around the place, a total professional and is really focused on game to game.’

Blackburn v Manchester City preview.

0

Blackburn Rovers welcome Premier League high flyers Manchester City to Ewood Park for a televised FA Cup 3rd Round fixture, in what will most certainly be a hotly contested North West Deby.

Rovers go into the game as real underdogs going into the fixture, but will be looking to cause an upset in what is always a superb weekend of Football to welcome in the new year.

The Ewood Park side currently sit in 10th place in the SkyBet Championship, as Rovers will be looking to DJ Campbell and on loan striker Rudy Gestade, who is on loan from Cardiff.

Jordan Rhodes does not start for Rovers today, with growing speculation about his future at Blackburn, so Gary Bowyer has opted to put the Scottish international on the bench for today’s encounter.

Blackburn come into the game after a superb 2-1 victory away at Leeds United, and are in confident mood ahead of a tough teat at home to the oil rich City.

Rovers right-back Todd Kane misses out with a thigh strain but Jason Lowe returns after a one-match suspension.

David Dunn is also out with a thigh strain, and Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson starts his first game for Rovers since the December of 2012, after a series of serious injuries.

City come into the fixture in superb form, having won their last twelve games, and in free scoring mood, after scoring an unbelievable 57 goals in 20 Barclays Premier League fixtures this season.

Pellegrini’s side have won their last four games in a row, the last being last weeks 3-2 win away at Swansea City.

Alvaro Negrado will most certainly spearhead City’s attack, with the Spaniard adapting to the English game in a superb manner, and forming a superb partnership with fellow striker Sergio Aguero, leading the goal scoring charts in the meantime.

Team news wise, Costal Pantilimon will replace Joe Hart in goal for the crunch Cup tie.

Manchester City playmaker David Silva returns from suspension but midfielder Jack Rodwell (hamstring) is out.

Strikers Sergio Aguero (calf) and Stevan Jovetic (hamstring), and defenders Micah Richards and Martin Demichelis (hamstring) are also out.

City have four games in the next twelve games, as Prllegrini looks looks to shape his squad for those games.

He said: “We are going to make changes because we are playing too often in the last (few) weeks.

“We are going to try to have a good squad and to win the first game in our FA Cup (campaign) because for our team it is an important cup.

“I said from the beginning of the season if we are going to play in every competition we must play with exactly the same importance.

“The FA Cup is a very traditional competition here in England and in every country of Europe the cup is always an important competition.

“I just told the players it an important test for us, not only for the team but for individual performances.”

Rovers have not won the showpiece since 1928, whilst City will be looking to avenge last years Cup Final defeat to Wigan Athletic.

PSG ready bid to sign Chelsea star Hazard

0

The Belgian star joined the Blues following the club’s Champions League triumph in 2012 and has demonstrated his talent to much acclaim, recently drawing huge praise from current manager Jose Mourinho.

This form has not gone unnoticed and according to reports in France, the big spending Ligue 1 club have set their sights on attempting to persuade Chelsea to part with their midfield ace.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is a huge admirer of Hazard, 22, and will offer the former Lille star a bumper contract to return to France next summer.

Manager Laurent Blanc has made the signing of a new creative midfielder at the club a priority after splashing £53m on Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani in the summer.

It seems unlikely that Chelsea will allow Hazard to leave Stamford Bridge, especially after producing a number of match-winning performances this season.

Mourinho is keen to secure the Belgian international on a new long-term deal, which would involve a significant pay increase to ward off any offer from PSG.

Much like Hazard, Mourinho is keen to keep hold of the unsettled Juan Mata.

Ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Derby County, the Chelsea boss has included Mata in the squad.

The Spanish star reacted angrily to being substituted in the victory over Southampton on New Year’s Day, but Mourinho has since confirmed his desire to keep Mata at the club

Man United fear Rooney won’t agree to a new deal

0

David Moyes admits there is no guarantee Wayne Rooney will sign a new contract at Old Trafford if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Rooney, who will miss Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie at home to Swansea with a groin injury, will enter the final year of his £250,000-a-week deal in the summer.

United are anxious to open negotiations over a new one but it is thought the 28-year-old wants to wait until after the World Cup before assessing his future and the club’s progress

United’s hopes of retaining the Barclays Premier League title suffered another blow on New Year’s Day when they slipped to seventh in the table after a defeat by Tottenham.

It raised fears that Rooney, subject of a £30million bid from Chelsea last summer, could leave if United cannot qualify for the Champions League.

Moyes said on Friday: ‘We would have to wait and see what happened in that situation.’

Asked if the England striker is happy at United, Moyes said: ‘I think if you look at his performances he’s certainly playing at his best.’

Rooney’s groin injury has kept him out of two of United’s last five games, although Moyes says he has ‘a chance’ of returning for the Capital One Cup semi-final against Sunderland on Tuesday.

Moyes said Ashley Young also has a shoulder injury as a result of a challenge from Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris on Wednesday.

Referee Howard Webb took no action, a decision described as ‘scandalous’ by Moyes, who thought the challenge was worthy of a penalty and red card for Lloris.

Brendan Rodgers charged by FA

0

Rodgers criticised the “horrendous” performance of the match officials and questioned the appointment of Bolton referee Lee Mason after the 2-1 loss.

He said: “Hopefully we won’t have a Greater Manchester referee with Liverpool-Manchester games in future.”

Rodgers has until 1800 GMT on 8 January 2014 to respond to the charge.

The Football Association said: “It is alleged the comments by Rodgers called into question the integrity of the match referee, and/or implied that the match referee was motivated by bias; and/or brought the game into disrepute; and/or amounted to a failure to act in the best interests of the game.”

Rodgers was particularly infuriated by a decision against Raheem Sterling, who put the ball in the net after being incorrectly flagged offside when the game was still goalless.

The Northern Irishman also claimed Luis Suarez had his shirt pulled by Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott inside the home penalty area in the late stages.

Liverpool were top of the Premier League at the start of Boxing Day, but dropped to fourth after City’s comeback victory at the Etihad Stadium.

The day after the game Rodgers insisted he was trying to make a valid point and did not intend to slight Mason.

“In terms of geography, I certainly wasn’t questioning the integrity of referees,” he said. “It was more than logical (as a comment) in terms of having a referee from that part of the world refereeing a game in Manchester.

“I wouldn’t suspect that Mike Dean, from the Wirral, has refereed many games for Liverpool over the years.

“I was only speaking honestly after the game. I think the FA and the Referees’ Association know perfectly well I am someone who engages in supporting the referees.”

Former England International Linked With Columbus Crew

0

The Columbus Crew likely won’t be in talks with names like Frank Lampard or Ronaldinho about suiting up in central Ohio, but the new coaching staff may be attempting to bring in a name English soccer fans might recognize.

The blog MLS Transfers, which attempts to be a one-stop location for movement and contract negotiations in MLS, claims they received a tip from England that new Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter is attempting to convince David Bentley to come for a trial in January.

The winger began his career with Arsenal of the English Premier League at 13-years old, but was loaned out to Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers in consecutive years. Blackburn signed Bentley from the Gunners and he went on to make 88 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

Bentley was thought to be one of the up-and-coming talents of English football, believed by many to be a natural replacement for David Beckham at the international level.

During the 2006-07 campaign, Bentley scored seven goals and registered 13 assists on his way to being named the Rovers’ Player of the Year.

Two seasons later, Tottenham splashed a reported £15 million on the midfielder and he signed a six-year contract. With Spurs, Bentley’s form began to suffer, scoring only three goals in 42 appearances.

Bentley was sent on a series of loans over the next three years including a return to Blackburn, but was unable to find the form from his previous stint.

After the 2013 season, Bentley was released by Tottenham and is currently a free agent, allowing him to sign anywhere.

Bentley played eight times for the England under-21 squad and has seven caps with the senior team.

If the rumor is to be believed, there is little risk in offering a player with this potential a preseason trial. At 29-year old, Bentley is still in his prime and would provide vast experience on a young team – having played both in the EPL and the UEFA Cup.

The preseason would allow Berhalter to see Bentley in action and judge how hit fits with his Columbus club.

If Bentley is able to return to form in MLS he could be a dangerous player for the Crew. He could replace the retired Eddie Gaven as a winger who is comfortable moving to central midfield or playing behind a lone striker.

The potential move is just a rumor, but if something amounts from this, Bentley could fill a large void for the Black and Gold.

FC Dallas keeper Raul Fernandez Could Be Heading Back To Peru

0

A report from Monday out of South America suggests that FC Dallas keeper Raul Fernandez could be headed back to Peru. Club Universitario is hoping to bring Fernandez back and the keeper has confirmed that his agent has been in talks with the Peruvian side.

The translation is pretty rough but here is the gist of what is being said. Fernandez won’t say that the talks are advance but he does seem to be interested in returning home to his native Peru.

Universitario is set to play in the Copa Liberitores in 2014 and could be in the market for a new keeper as both of their current keepers are on the younger side and Fernandez does have the big international experience over them.

Fernandez is signed with FCD through the 2016 season, so it likely won’t be cheap to get him out of his current deal with the club. He was an All-Star in his first season with FC Dallas. But from the sound of everything, the guy just wants a pay raise. Right now he’s earning almost $240k in total compensation, with a likely bump next season (via the MLSPU CBA). He’s actually one of top earning keepers in the league in 2013.

I do think it would be fairly shocking to see Fernandez go after one season but given how stocked the club is in the keeper department, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to have happen.
