Enzo Maresca has spoken for the first time publicly as the new Chelsea head coach. The Italian, who was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor last month, has finally spoken in an extensive interview with the club’s media team. Maresca was asked about a whole variety of subjects, including his play-style and the significance of building a connection with the supporters.
Enzo Maresca says his priority is to create the right mentality and culture as he begins his stint as Chelsea head coach. Maresca, 44, joined Chelsea from Leicester City in June. He signed a five-year deal which includes a club-held option to extend by 12 months.
“When you join a club, you try to analyse what the club and team need to improve and do the right things,” Maresca said. “For me, it’s clear we need to create as soon as possible the right mentality and culture, a culture that the fans can be proud of. This is very important.
Enzo Maresca Promises to Bring Excitement and Asks Fans to ‘Trust the Idea’
Enzo Maresca has urged Chelsea’s supporters to “trust the idea” and promised to instill an enterprising, aggressive style of play at Stamford Bridge. Maresca’s Leicester were known for their progressive brand of football, ranking second in the Championship for possession share (62.3%) and successful passes (25,248) last term while leading the way for expected goals (85.8 xG).
“I’m very proud to be an Italian manager here again,” Maresca said. “Probably there is something between Chelsea as a club, as a family, and Italian people that works well!” He added: “I consider Chelsea one of the biggest clubs in the world so I will feel very proud of it.”
