Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s victory at Euro 2020, where he finished level on five goals with Patrik Schick of Czechia, UEFA has announced that they will divide the Euro 2024 Golden Boot between six players if Sunday’s final between England and Spain does not produce a clear winner.

As they prepare for the tournament final in Berlin, England captain Harry Kane and Spain attacker Dani Olmo are two of six players who are locked on three goals thus far. The crowded leaderboard is composed of Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia), Jamal Musiala (Germany), and Cody Gakpo (Netherlands).

What are the new Golden Boot Rules?

The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scored the most goals, simple. However, in previous tournaments, if multiple players finish with the same total, there have been tiebreakers. The first tiebreaker is the players’ total number of assists.

For instance, Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrick Schick each scored five goals at Euro 2020, but the Portuguese icon won the trophy because he had one assist to the Czech player’s zero. As was the situation at Euro 2012 when Mario Gomez and Fernando Torres each finished with three goals and one assist, the player with the most assists in fewer minutes wins.

Spain’s Torres played 189 minutes in the competition, whereas Germany’s Gomez played 282 minutes, making Torres the winner. There will be no tiebreakers, as UEFA said on Friday. “If there is a tie [in the number of goals scored], the UEFA Football Division has confirmed the Alipay+-backed award will be shared,” the organization said. It was previously assumed that these criteria would be applied again at Euro 2024.

Euro 2024 Golden Boot standings:

1. Dani Olmo Spain 3 2 F
2. Cody Gakpo Netherlands 3 1 SF
2. Georges Mikautadze Georgia 3 1 R16
4. Ivan Schranz Slovakia 3 0 R16
4. Jamal Musiala Germany 3 0 QF
4. Harry Kane England 3 0 F
