Everton have reportedly told Mason Holgate to find a temporary home through the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old has struggled to find minutes under Marco Silva and is behind Michael Keane, Kurt Zouma, Yerry Mina and Phil Jagielka in the pecking order. He last appeared for a Premier League fixture back in September and has only featured in 6 games this season.

The Toffees do not want to hinder Holgate’s growth especially after signing him into a 5-year contract extension last year.

He is a versatile defender who is naturally a centre-back but can play out wide as well. The Englishman is a product of the Barnsley youth academy and proved everyone to be an outstanding talent in his debut season at senior level.

Everton signed him in the summer of 2015 and the centre-half so far featured in 48 club games across all competitions. Holgate did enjoy more minutes under previous managers Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce but has failed to cut it for Silva.

The ambitious Portuguese is looking to transcend the club to elite status and is very well supported by Everton’s high investment strategy. Holgate can still have a bright future at Goodison but might have to elevate his game first with some time away from the club, especially if he wants Gareth Southgate to take notice.
