Hughes admits that the decision lies firmly with Liverpool, but that he is remaining positive about it.

Assaidi’s season at the Britannia Stadium was successful, scoring four goals in 19 Premier League appearances, and creating 19 goalscoring chances for his teammates, according to Squawka.

He famously scored a last minute winner as Stoke beat Chelsea 3-2 back in December 2013.

Assaidi arrived at Liverpool from Dutch side Heerenveen in 2012, but made just four league appearances in 2012/13.

And Hughes believes Assaidi may not be part of Brendan Rodgers plans for his squad this summer.

“The ball is very much in Liverpool’s court because he is their player,” Hughes told local newspaper The Sentinel.

I’m not saying I know what they are thinking, but I would imagine that being in the Champions League they will spend more money this summer.

“And that could go against Ossie having a place there.

“He is their player and we mustn’t forget that, but yes we are hopeful of keeping him here.

“It’s fair to say that he’s enjoyed his time with us and we have enjoyed having him here.”
