5. Andy Carroll to Liverpool
After the sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea for £50m in 2011, Liverpool needed a striker who could replace the Spaniard.
Andy Carroll was that man as he joined Liverpool the same day Torres left. The Reds spent £35m of the £50m raised on the Newcastle United striker, but sadly, it was £35m wasted as he failed to show his St James Park form.
Carroll couldn’t last two seasons at Liverpool as in 2012 he was loaned to West Ham United before finally making a move to the London club permanently in 2013 in a deal worth just ÂŁ15m.
