Bakayoko is the club’s third most expensive player in their history when he secured a ÂŁ40m deal from Monaco earlier this month.

The deal had been a in the works for months, the hold up being surgery on a minor knee injury at the end of last season, plus some late haggling over the size of the fee, to delay things.

The 22-year-old’s knee problem caused coach Antonio Conte a problem. Instead of training with his new team-mates on their pre-season tour of the Far East, he is back at their base in Cobham doing some light training in order to get back to full fitness.

Conte explained to Standard Sport: “For me, it’s very important to have the players work with me and understand my idea of football.

“For example, Bakayoko. He doesn’t know anything about my idea of football. For sure he needs a bit of time to adapt and to understand.

“This is the great difficulty for a coach who has an idea of football and wants to give an identity.

“When you take (buy) a player you need a bit of time to bring the player into your idea. It is the same now for (other summer buys) Alvaro Morata and Antonio Rudiger. For sure if the player arrives as soon as possible, it’s easier for me.”
