Striker urged agent to snub move to St James’ Park
Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette has confirmed he rejected the chance to join Newcastle United earlier this month.
The French forward has been heavily linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 side in recent months, with several clubs across Europe interested.
However, it was Newcastle who made the first formal move by reportedly offering Lyon £18million for their star-striker.
According to reports, Steve McClaren made the transfer offer just days after the transfer window opened, but Lacazette urged his agent to snub the offer because he’s happy at Lyon.
Lacazette Snubs Newcastle
“I read what is written by you in the media,” said Lacazette.
“Now, I am at Lyon, I want to do a good second half of the season, so for me a departure is not on the agenda.
“It is my agent, David Venditelli, who deals with that.
“He knows very well that I do not want to leave, so he rejected the offer.”
Despite missing out on Lacazette, Newcastle have announced the signing of Henri Saviet from Bordeaux and have also had a £12m bid accepted for Jonjo Shelvey.
