Roman Abramovich invites Jose Mourinho to dinner, Conte replacement?
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has invited Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to dinner after Sunday’s match at Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Mail.
Mourinho returns to his former club with the Red Devils this weekend in search of three crucial points in the Premier League title race. The Mail says that he is yet to respond to the Russian billionaire’s offer.
Abramovich twice hired the Portuguese tactician as Chelsea manager, and with pressure mounting on current boss Antonio Conte following a poor run of form, there is talk that he may look to convince Mourinho to take over for a third time.
However, it does seem unlikely that he would return to Stamford Bridge particularly while Abramovich is still there, given the reportedly strained relationship between the two.
“He was never my friend,” Mourinho said about Abramovich last year. “We always had the relationship of owner-manager. It was always respectful, but we were never close to each other.”
It could be just a friendly invitation and part of the post-match ritual, but does seem a little suspicious given that the invite reportedly comes from the Chelsea owner himself.
Mourinho won three league titles, one FA Cup and three League Cup titles in his two spells at Chelsea, and is the most successful manager in the club’s history.
Now at United, he is looking to emulate his success in London and take the Red Devils back up to the top of the European game.
