Chelsea legend reveals why former-boss failed at Stamford Bridge

Former-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has revealed all about the club’s time under Andre Villas-Boas, and has revealed why the Portuguese manager failed at the club.

The manager arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2011, after agreeing to leave FC Porto, but straight away Villas-Boas wanted to make drastic changes to the team and was ready to cut some of the older players.

However, the changes and the decisions he was making at Chelsea lead to some players unhappiness, including the club veterans like Drogba, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard.

Villas-Boas was desperate to make Chelsea a younger squad, and by doing that, he chose to push out some of the club’s legends because of their age.

Speaking about the Portuguese’s tenure, Drogba admitted that it was his own fault he failed at Stamford Bridge and that was because he chose to alienate the experienced players.

Drogba Reveals All

“That’s his right, because the club needed to keep moving forwards, but he shouldn’t have kept those players at the club while he was trying to make his revolution,” Drogba wrote in his new autobiography, Commitment.

“Although we weren’t going around complaining, it had an impact on the rest of the squad if we weren’t happy.”

According to reports, the team came to blows following a 2-1 loss to Liverpool.

Villas-Boas held a meeting with the senior players which was when Drogba advised him to stop rotating star players.

However, the manager ignored the Ivorian’s request.

“It was as if the conversation (the day before) had never happened.”

He continued: “You have to be able to listen [to experienced individuals] and communicate with them.

“Otherwise, if you manage a team like Chelsea, you’re heading for a fall.”

Villas-Boas lost his job on the 4th March 2012.
