Tottenham Hotspur manager has defended his actions after his goalkeeper was involved in a nasty incident with Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Hugo Lloris was left unconscious after being hit in the temple by Lukaku’s knee during their 0-0 draw and despite the nasty injury, the Frenchman continued to play the rest of the game after telling the physios and Villas-Boas he felt fine.

However, after the game, several people were left angry and shocked at the Portuguese-manager for allowing the goalkeeper to carry on playing.

Despite the negative criticism about the decision, Villas-Boas has defended his actions and believes he made the correct call, even if others do not.

“I stand by the decision I took and I stand by the decision made by my medical staff,” said Villas-Boas.

The Portuguese added: “They did everything by the book.

“A couple of people used this as an opportunity to get some publicity. They have no experience on the pitch of these situations.

“It is not comparable to NFL or rugby. It is not comparable to [Chelsea goalkeeper] Petr Cech. It astonishes me that it is trying to be put in the same mode as these situations.”
