Reports today say Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is set to bring back “Important” Alvaro Morata for their Champions League clash with Roma
Antonio Conte has confirmed Alvaro Morata is on course to start Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Roma.
The Spanish striker – scorer of seven goals in his nine games since his £58million move from Real Madrid – has been absent since limping out of Chelsea’s Premier League defeat at home to Manchester City on September 30.
Michy Batshuayi deputised against Crystal Palace on Saturday but was panned for a poor display with his lack of movement highlighted on the BBC’s Match of the Day show.
It was the second time that Chelsea had lost back-to-back Premier League games under Conte, still without N’Golo Kante until next month.
The Chelsea boss, who admitted at Selhurst Park to being furious with the overall performance, said: “Alvaro is in contention for tomorrow’s game. He’s been training with us and he is in contention for tomorrow.”
Asked whether it is important that the Spaniard starts, Conte replied: “Do you think differently?”
“We know very well what is our situation. For sure when there are injuries of this type and important players, for sure it is difficult for us. It is very difficult.
“But there is this situation and we must be very good to overcome and to try to do our best. But it is not simple when you do not have players like Morata and Kante. Important players.”
Asked why his side are struggling with so many injuries, Conte appeared to suggest his squad’s lack of depth, after a summer frustrating transfer window, was a key factor.
He added: “The problem is that we are always playing the same playrs. We also have players that are not used to playing three days in a row. Kante it is the first time. Moses. Alonso it is the same.
