Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has revealed that arguing with each other has helped the club improve in big games.

The Gunners were smashed by Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea last season, but have managed to take four points off City and Liverpool this time around with an impressive 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium and a thumping 4-1 home at the Emirates against Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Arsenal were always questioned about their performances in the big matches and Mertesacker has admitted that the players started arguing with each other and in some ways, that helped them improve.

The German international was picture last season ordering Mesut Ozil over to the away end to thank them for the support and he believes it’s that type of confrontation that makes them stronger.

He told the Independent: ‘We tried to think what went wrong for us last season, especially when we got beaten heavily by those big teams. Very severe.

‘It’s always a big discussion. I mean, we are responsible for our performances. No one wants to have such a miserable day again.’

‘You need that arguing culture. We lost that at times. It gets personal, and someone gets upset too quickly, but you have to face the truth and have a proper argument. That was normal 10 years ago and it has slightly changed.

‘We lost that a bit, what is the intention of argument. It’s really important, not only in general, but in a footballer’s life. It has to get louder sometimes. We need to discuss, to find solutions, to get everyone in one direction.’
