Arsenal and Chelsea are chasing the signature of Alessio Romagnoli, with Roma being open to sell the defender.

Arsenal and Chelsea have shown keen interest in the 20-year-old in recent months, with both clubs willing to pay huge money to sign Romagnoli, despite Italian giants AC Milan also targeting the starlet.

Football Italia say that Milan had a bid rejected by Italy’s capital side, with Roma not wanting to sell to a Serie A rival – opening the door to the Premier League duo.

The Italy U21 international is currently valued at ÂŁ25million by his parent club, after impressing manager Rudi Garcia while out on loan at fellow Italian side Sampdoria.

The Gunners were leading the race to sign the Roma academy product, as they want a reliable understudy for World-Cup winner Per Mertesacker as manager Arsene Wenger looking to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new Premier League season.

However, Chelsea have joined the race to sign the youngster after failing in a bid to sign Everton defender John Stones, with the Blues now preparing to offer winger Mohamed Salah along with ÂŁ10million for the defender.

Roma are interested in signing Salah, 23, and he could be part of the deal to bring Romagnoli to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is still looking to sign Stones, with the club lining up a new and improved offer for the England international.

If Arsenal fail to get the Romagnoli transfer completed within the two weeks, they could turn their attention to 21-year-old Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti.
