Arsenal and United to battle for Vlaar

Arsenal and Manchester United are set to do battle for Aston Villa centre-back, Ron Vlaar, after the Dutchman had an impressive World Cup in Brazil.

The 29-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at Villa Park, and with no contract talks in place as of yet, the two clubs could be in line to sign him for free next Summer, once his contract expires.

Due to bosman ruling, Arsenal or United cannot speak to Vlaar in January, but can immediately talk to the player when he enters the final three months of his contract, and if a new deal hasn’t been signed by then, Vlaar can agree in principle a deal with any club.

After enjoying a successful World Cup with Louis Van Gaal, it was reported that he would make a Summer switch to Manchester United in order to join up with Van Gaal, but no offers were made from the Manchester club.

However, on transfer deadline day, a late enquiry was thrown in for Vlaar by Arsenal, who were short in the defensive area, but Paul Lambert snubbed their interest and told them the Dutchman wasn’t for sale.
