Arsenal Football Club have announced the signing of Southampton right-back Calum Chambers.

The 19-year-old has joined the North London club and becomes the fitfh player to leave Southampton this Summer following; Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana (Liverpool), and also Luke Shaw (Manchester United).

The fee is reportedly around £16million after bonuses and add-ons, and the Englishman has signed a long-term deal at the Emirates Stadium, and will provide competition for Mathieu Debuchy, who also joined the club this Summer from Newcastle United.

When talking about Chambers, Wenger admitted that it’s a gamble with the price-tag, but he admitted that he’s a versatile player who he is a big fan of.

‘He hasn’t played many games but the English players on the market in England are very expensive,’ he said.

‘At the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a one for the future.

‘He is a player I wanted because I rated his quality and intelligence. He is only 19 and can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in those three positions.’

“We are very pleased that Calum has agreed to join us. The way he adapted to the Premier League last season with Southampton at a young age shows that he has tremendous quality. He has a lot of the attributes that we look for in a young player and I am sure that he will do well with us.”

Chambers said: “I am so happy to be signing for Arsenal. They are a team I have much admired for their playing style, and a team who have been one of the top sides in Europe for many years. I’m looking forward to joining up with my new team-mates today and beginning preparation for the season ahead.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone at Southampton FC for everything they have done for me and for making this move possible.”

Chambers signing means Carl Jenkinson and Hector Bellerin could both be sent on loan to get first-team experience.
