Arsenal have reportedly had a £20million bid rejected for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The Portuguese international, who has been monitored by both Chelsea and Manchester United, is strongly linked with a move away from Portugal this Summer, and Arsenal have made the first official move by offering £20m for the 22-year-old.

According to some reports, Arsenal have already made a £24m offer for Carvalho, but the bid was rejected due to the Premier League club offering the money in installments, which Lisbon do not want as they want the cash up front in order to strengthen their squad.

Now, The Gunners have offered £20m up front for the midfielder, but that bid has also been rejected as Lisbon want roughly £28m for the Portuguese man.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that his side need reinforcements in the defensive area, and with Mikel Arteta hobbling off injured last night, the need for a holding midfielder is even more vital for the Frenchman.
