Arsenal in pole position to sign Khedira

Reports from Spain suggest that Arsenal are working on a deal to bring Sami Khedira to the Emirates.

We told you earlier that Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in signing the Real Madrid midfielder, but now it seems as if the Gunners are the favourites to secure his services.

A proposed move to North London looked to be on the cards this summer, but the deal fell through, before advanced negotiations could be agreed.

Arsenal will look to double their efforts to bring in Khedira in January. Arsene Wenger is particularly interested in wrapping up the deal quickly and negotiating a lucrative contract.

The German’s current contract at the Bernabeu will run out at the end of the season and Arsenal hope they can bring him in for relatively cheap money.

It’s a proactive move from Wenger, in potentially bringing in a holding player who can protect their back four.

Arsenal were criticised last season for being too open defensively, especially in the big games away from home against rivals Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, where they conceded 17 goals.

It might not fix Arsenal’s defensive frailties but Khedira would certainly add solidity and not leave fellow German Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny exposed.
