Mathieu Flamini brace gives Gunners massive win

Arsenal have knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the Capital One Cup this evening thanks to a brace from Mathieu Flamini.

Both teams made several changes going into the game, questioning the importance of the cup, and many Arsenal fans were left angered by seeing a partnership of Flamini and Mikel Arteta in the centre of midfield.

However, it was the Frenchman who stole the show for the Gunners with a goal in both halves to give them the 2-1 win.

Tottenham went into the game high on confidence, following back-to-back victories, while Arsenal were on a run of two defeats, including a 2-0 London derby loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

Match Summary

Despite the difference in form, it was Arsene Wenger’s men who took the lead when an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shot was fumbled by Michel Vorm straight to the feet of Flamini who smashed home.

Arsenal went into the break 1-0 at half-time despite numerous openings for Spurs.

The Lilywhites did eventually equaliser however in the 56th minute when Calum Chambers turned the ball home past David Ospina, much to the delight of the home crowd.

But it was Arsenal fans who had the last laugh when Flamini volleyed home from outside the box in sensational fashion.

Match Reaction

Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini speaking to Sky Sports: “I’m happy for the team and personally. I’ve heard many things in the press and I am still here. I don’t have any problems with anyone at the club.

“It is never easy when you don’t play every game. I had a point to prove.”
