Wenger held discussions with the Atletico forward this summer

Arsenal missed on an £80 million deal to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann this summer, according to reports.

It has been a frustrating transfer window for Arsenal fans, with a large number of the club’s support unimpressed with Arsene Wenger’s lack of spending in the transfer market, yet again.

The latest reports have revealed that the Frenchman held discussions with Griezmann earlier this summer, who subsequently signed a new five-year deal with Atletico.

It is understood that the 25-year-old had no desire to leave the Spanish capital, with his family settled in Madrid, forcing Wenger to move onto other targets, while also failing to securing the signing of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette.

Lucas Perez is set to move to the Emirates within the next 48 hours, alongside defender Shkodran Mustafi, after both completed medicals.

But an Arsenal source has revealed it could have been a very different transfer window, had Griezmann been willing to make a switch to the Premier League.

“Arsene and Griezmann held talks during the Euros about his situation.” an Arsenal source claimed.

“The player told him outright that he was happy in Spain, and his family were enjoying life there.”

However, the source refused to rule out a move for the player in the future, although it will be no consolation to Gunners fans who have watched their closest rivals spend big this summer.

Jamie Vardy rejected a move to the Emirates, in favour of staying with Premier League champions Leicester City, while Romelu Lukaku and Gonzalo Higuain were also on the north Londoner’s raider, although nothing came of their interest.

For now, at least, Perez will help to bolster Wenger’s midfield, and challenge Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck for a starting birth.
