Arsenal progress, what’s next?

As many of us saw yesterday, unless you watched the League cup matches which too looked something special, Arsenal made it safely through the the group stage of the Champions league also picking up a decent amount of money to go with it. But what awaits them?

We, as well always do, avoid the usual teams of Madrid, Barcelona and Munich but it doesn’t get easier. With the likes of PSG, Juventus, Napoli, Dortmund all lurking in the smaller pots we could be in for a tasty but harsh treat in the group stage. Even a yearly trip to Greece to play Olympiakos, like the last two seasons, has been met with pessimism as we’ve gone and lost on the two occasions. Other teams we could meet are Schalke, who didn’t do us any favours last season, Zenit, and many many other teams which you wouldn’t expect to give us trouble, but will. We may even have to take a trip back to Turkey to meet our foe’s Galatasaray. However its not just Arsenal having to be worried, Man City fans also. Being in pot 3 as many people expect will make most fans sweat. The last two seasons haven’t been kind for the blue side of Manchester especially with last years “group of death”

One thing is for sure though this year looks very difficult for any team regardless what pot and no one will be through. Man utd two years back seemed routine favourites to go through and crashed out at the group stage, Chelsea did last year, although the group being hard on them, and Man City not winning 1 game last season. All in all this years Champions League is gearing up to be one of many good battles between the big guns whether its Barcelona-Bayern, Madrid-United or Arsenal-Dortmund. We can all look forward to a great few months depending on how well they do
