Due to strong interest from two of England’s biggest football clubs, Joao Neves’ future has become a critical concern for Benfica. According to Portuguese publication Abola, Benfica is adamant about the €120 million, £102 million release clause for their player, despite the alluring offers of €60 million, £51 million from both Manchester United and Arsenal.
According to Bola, Mikel Arteta’s team recently made a £51 million bid to capture Neves, but Benfica was not persuaded to accept the offer. It is “expected” that the London Titans will shortly provide a revised plan. Although they are conscious that their value may be too high for any potential buyer, Benfica is holding out for the player’s £102 million release clause.
Arsenal keen on signing Portuguese wonderkid Joao Neves
With Benfica, the 19-year-old enjoyed an outstanding season last year. In the highest division in Portugal, he won about 60% of his duels with a passing accuracy of 90%. His aggressive pushing in the opposing half and unwavering work ethic were further strengths.
With 55 appearances and a meagre three goals for the team this season, Neves has been a constant for Benfica. A call-up to the Portugal squad for this summer’s European Championships in Germany is the result of his efforts.
Although Arsenal should have an advantage over United given that they qualified for the Champions League for the following season, a Bola report suggests that United is also in the running to sign the wonderkid.
