Arsenal set to abandon transfer hunt

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could be set to abandon his transfer quest for a new holding midfielder, as he weighs up the option of playing new signing Calum Chambers in that position.

The young Englishman was signed this Summer from Southampton for ÂŁ16million, and despite being known as a right-back, Wenger is adamant that he can also do a job at centre-back and also central midfield, which is where Arsenal are lacking depth.

The North London club have been monitoring several players for that position, with Morgan Schneiderlin, Lars Bender, Sami Khedira and William Carvalho all linked with a potential move to the Emirates Stadium, but it now appears that Wenger may give the role to Chambers instead.

The 19-year-old made his Arsenal debut this weekend at the Emirates Cup, and he showed composure and confidence with two solid performances for his new side.

Wenger is keen to add two more players to his squad, but a holding-midfielder may not be one of them now as he plans to use Chambers, and have Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini as back-up options.

“He can play central midfield as well as he has good technique, great mobility and is a good good distance runner,” Wenger said.

“It is where I can have a look at him.

“He was educated as a central midfielder and then played with England under-19 at centre-back and right-back for Southampton and that is where I saw him the first time against us and I liked him.”
