Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has admitted that he was not happy when he saw the club being linked with Gonzalo Higuain, but has also revealed that he wanted them to sign Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The Frenchman has been in superb form for The Gunners so far this season, scoring four goals from four games, including the winner against fierce-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, but his starting spot could have been in jeopardy if the club managed to sign Higuain from Real Madrid in the summer.

However, the proposed deal eventually fell through after Napoli snapped up the Argentinian at the last minute because Arsene Wenger stalled on the move as he weighed up a potential bid for Suarez.

In the end, Wenger missed out on both of the striker’s and kept with Giroud as his lone-frontman and he has revealed that he was a bit anxious when the club went after Higuain.

‘When the name of Suarez was circulating, I honestly thought it was a good thing for the team. He would have been complementary,’ Giroud told L’Equipe.

‘I’m getting a little more legitimacy, especially this season. But I repeat, Suarez would have been a cannon.

‘Suarez can also play on one side [out wide]. It would have been difficult for me with another player.

‘We (He and Higuain) would have been in direct competition because he is a pure central striker.

‘Of course, at the time, it would have bothered me a bit. But I was not afraid of competition.’
