Arsenal are preparing to make a £4million bid for West Ham United defender, Winston Reid, as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his defensive options in January.

The transfer window is set to open next week, and Arsenal are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, with a centre-back and a holding-midfielder high on the club’s wishlist.

Due to injuries throughout the season, The Gunners have played natural wing-backs at centre-backs and have also overplayer Summer signing, Calum Chambers, according to Wenger, who stated this week that the youngster had ‘hit the wall’.

With a defender needed, Wenger will look to sign Reid from The Hammers and sees him as the perfect backup centre-back.

Reid, who would be able to play in Champions League games, has just six months left on his contract, and could end up leaving Upton Park for nothing in the Summer, but Arsenal are prepared to give them £4m next month.

According to reports, the 26-year-old wants £60k-a-week and a £1m signing on fee from West Ham.
