The Blues came away with the spoils against ten-man Arsenal
It was a day of joy for Chelsea fans around the world as they managed to beat rivals Arsenal 1-0 in what was a rather scrappy game of football at times.
Diego Costa’s goal in the 23 minute sealed the win for the Blues, who are now without defeat against the Gunners in the last nine games between the two sides.
One of the reason’s Arsene Wenger’s side did rather poorly in the match was due to the fact they were reduced to ten-men after just 18 minutes – centre-back Per Mertesacker brought down Costa, who was racing through on goal, and the straight red was shown.
It led to main striker Olivier Giroud being hauled off and on came Gabriel in defence, meaning Arsenal were largely reliant on Mesut Ozil to get them back into the game, as they placed him up-front.
However, the best chance of the game for the Gunners instead came to midfielder Mathieu Flamini on the brink of half-time. Aaron Ramsey played a nice through ball, which came to the Frenchman, who blasted over from close range.
Costa had several other chances to increase the Blues lead but none of them were too threatening and in the end, he made way for Loic Remy, who had a rather average game when he came on.
The Blues main player was arguably Willian once again, as he put in yet another fine showing for Guus Hiddink’s side and not for the first time this season. Cesc Fabregas also had a decent game against his former club, helping his new team get the three points.
Ramsey was arguably Arsenal’s best player as he had a superb game in the middle of the park for the Gunners, trying to create chances and get his team going but he on his own could not win the game for the home side.
Instead, it was Chelsea who claimed all three points in what will be a huge boost to the club as they bid to get back towards the right end of the Premier League table.
