The Gunners are refusing to meet Madrid’s valuation of the striker

The club have been heavily linked with a move for Benzema all summer as Wenger hopes to mount a serious title challenge.

After having one approach already knocked back by Madrid, the club say they will not pay over the odds for the 27-year-old.

The Panic Button?

It was thought that a £45m was being prepared after Arsenal’s bad start to the season on Saturday.

Although Wenger has said he will not panic and splash the cash due to one bad result.

It seems a deal for Benzema will only happen if it becomes possible to do so at a lower price.

Wenger spoke after the West Ham defeat: “I can only repeat what I’ve said; if an exceptional solution turns up, we will do it.”

“We bought and still lost the game. We listen to people but we still have to focus on the quality of our performance.”

The club have only signed one senior player this summer, that being a £10m deal for Petr Cech but the 2-0 defeat is a debut the ‘keeper will want to quickly forget.
