Arsene Wenger had Liverpool fears with Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed how he thought Alexis Sanchez would end up at Liverpool.

The Chilean left FC Barcelona over the Summer and was wanted by both Arsenal and Liverpool, who meet at the Emirates Stadium this weekend, and in his pre-match press conference, the Frenchman admitted that he was worried he’d miss out on the talented winger.

However, that was not the case and Arsenal secured Alexis in a ÂŁ32million deal, which he soon paid back by contributing with goals and assists during his first season in England.

With Liverpool selling Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Wenger admitted that he thought the deal was in place to see Alexis go to Anfield.

“I was aware of Liverpool’s interest but you never know [at the time] if it’s really true,” said Wenger.

“But I thought it could be true because of Suarez.

“In the negotiations [for Sanchez], yes, it was a strength [Liverpool were already speaking with Barcelona about Suarez]. It made sense, an exchange and some money for Liverpool.

“At the end of the day only Sanchez can explain to you why he has chosen us. I don’t know why he did that but we were happy to let him make that decision.”
