Gunners boss knows what he needs this summer

Arsene Wenger has revealed that his no.1 priority this summer is signing an experienced centre-back, following a bad injury to defender Per Mertesacker.

The German centre-back underwent surgery in Germany yesterday after picking up an injury in the 1-1 draw against Lens on Friday evening, with Wenger unsure how long the 31-year-old will be sidelined for.

“I know you will ask me for how long he will be out. I don’t know that, it’s [some] months, but I don’t know [exactly] how long he will be out for,” he said in a press conference ahead of the Gunners clash against an MLS All-Stars side in San Jose on Friday evening.

With Gabriel not on the US tour because of illness and Laurent Koscielny on an extended break following Euro 2016 , the Gunners are extremely short of experienced defenders.

Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding are the only options currently available to Wenger at the centre of defense and the Frenchman admitted he is on the lookout for more experience.

“We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience. We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well.

“With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in.”
