Ashley Cole has annouced that he is determined to make the England world cup squad and has said that “people want him to fail”. The Chelsea man looks set to miss out on the squad with Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw being further ahead in the selection ladder. However Englands most capped tournament player once gain showed his qulity with world class performances against Athletic Madrid and Liverpool, despite being seond choice left back for more than 3 months.
“There was probably a lot of pressure on me to fight for my England spot,” Cole told beIn SPORTS.
“Maybe not just my starting spot even – just to get on the plane. I think everyone wanted me to fail, to be honest.
“I think real football fans understand what I bring to a team and what I give to a team and if I do make it on the plane hopefully people can see that.
“But ultimately most people wanted me to fail in Madrid last week, for sure.
“Maybe people have seen me play for 13 years for my country and have probably had enough of it.
“You look at the players and you have Baines who is playing brilliant and young Luke Shaw who has done amazing this season so I don’t blame them, they’ve got reasons to, but like I said in my Nike ad – I’m not done yet.”
The 33 year old has started every England tournament match since opening day of 2002 world cup and not missed a single minute since Euro 2004. Jose Mourinho has recently praiseed the left back and has said:
“These matches represent 20 games – and Mr Roy Hodgson knows that Ashley Cole is ready for the World Cup.”
With many of Englands top young talents having remarkable seasons for their clubs, some of Englands more experienced players could miss out of this world cup.
