Cole is reportedly linked with a season long loan deal

Former Arsenal and Chelsea left back Ashley Cole could be set for a surprise return to the Premier League with Newcastle United.

Cole moved to Roma last summer after eight seasons at Stamford Bridge, but had a poor first season in the Italian capital.

The 34 year old has a year left on his contract at the Stadio Olimpico, but new Toon manager Steve McClaren is reportedly keen to make the ex-England star his first signing as boss.

Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett are Newcastle’s other left backs

The two clubs clearly have a good relationship, with Newcastle selling left back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to Roma in the previous transfer window.

Cole, England’s fifth most capped player with 107 games, made just 11 Serie A appearances last season. He also endured a torrid night up against Arjen Robben in the Champions League, as Roma embarassingly lost 7-1 to Bayern Munich in the group stage.

Next season, Cole will be third choice left back at the Stadio Olimpico, behind the Greece international duo of Vasilis Torosidis and Jose Holebas.
