Defender is a free agent after Manchester City departure
Aston Villa are set to announce the signing of former-Manchester City right-back Micah Richards.
The English defender agreed to leave The Citizens after his contract expired, and it looks like he will be joining Tim Sherwood‘s Villa with an announcement expected over the next few days.
Injuries and Competition
Richards, who has been injury-plagued over the last few years, spent most of last season in Italy, on-loan at Fiorentina, after failing to break into the City first-team.
The 26-year-old failed to displace Pablo Zabaleta in the starting line-up, and after Bacary Sagna arrived last Summer on a free transfer after leaving Arsenal, it was clear his future was away from the Etihad Stadium.
According to reports, Richards will undergo a medical in the Midlands on Tuesday, with the deal expected to be announced later that week.
It will be Sherwood’s first signing as Villa boss after he took over from Paul Lambert earlier this year.
The new Villains boss believes he can get the best out of Richards and is prepared to meet his wage-demands of £65k-a-week, making him one of the top earners at Villa Park.
Richards’ Time at City
The versatile star has been at City since 2005, after spending four years in their youth set-up, and went on to make 179 league appearances for the club.
He managed 10 Serie A appearances last season for Fiorentina.
