Benfica have confirmed that Atletico Madrid have submitted a bid of €126 million for their teenage winger Joao Felix.
Felix established himself as one of the most talented youngsters in world football through his performances for Benfica during the 2018/19 season. The 19-year old netted 20 goals while providing 11 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions as Benfica won the Primera Liga for the 37th time and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Felix scored a hat-trick in a Europa League quarter-final leg against Eintracht Frankfurt. However, Frankfurt advanced on away goals. \
His performances for Benfica earned Felix a call-up to the Portugal national team and he played their UEFA Nations League semi-final against Switzerland while being an unused substitute as Portugal won the Nations League by beating Netherlands in the final at Porto.
Felix’s performances for Benfica have attracted attention from some of the biggest clubs in Europe like Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. Benfica reportedly rejected a bid from Liverpool and since then, Manchester United and Manchester City were heavy favorites to land him.
Recently, Atletico Madrid joined the race to sign Felix and seemed the frontrunner to land him. Now, Benfica have confirmed that Atleti have tabled a massive bid for the youngster.
A statement on Benfica’s official website read, “Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD communicated, this Wednesday, to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission to have received from Club Atlético de Madrid, SAD a “proposal for the definitive acquisition of sports rights” from João Félix for an amount of 126 million euros, ‘which is being analyzed’.”
It seems that Atletico Madrid are on the brink of signing Felix as hardly anyone will reject a bid of €126 million for anyone. The 2018-19 season turned out to be the final season for many of Atletico Madrid’s players like Lucas Hernandez, Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin and Juanfran while there is a good chance that Rodri will depart for Manchester City. Hence, Diego Simeone needs some reinforcements for his club for the next season.
Provide Atletico Madrid do sign Felix, the 19-year old will become the most expensive Portuguese footballer in the world, surpassing the €100 million that Juventus paid to land Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.
